SUBJECT: GHSC Newsletter: September Edition

Welcome back to campus, Grizzly Families! The GHSC Board and the staff are excited about another great year on the Guadalupe campus. Our favorite programs, events, and activities are back- along with some new treats for the students and the whole family. Read below or join us at our first GHSC All Member meeting later this month on 9/13 @ 8 PM (see calendar below.)

The Guadalupe Classroom Giving Drive is winding down and right now we have only reached 27% of our overall goal. Below is a detailed breakdown of each grade's current percentage of their overall goal.

 CURRENT % REACHED   (AT RISK)

  • TK = 50%

  • Kinder = 44%  (Hidden Villa)

  • First = 42%   (Oakland Zoo)

  • Second = 37% (Tech Museum)

  • Third = 49%  (Marine Institute)

  • Fourth = 49%  (Fraction Pizza)

  • Fifth = 46% (5th Grade Pool Party)

Parents and family members- this fundraiser is vital and 100% of the funds go directly to your students and their classrooms. If you have already donated, THANK YOU! If a grade level cannot raise funds, they risk canceling a field trip (or two) and class events and celebrations will cost more or suffer the fate of the field trips.

Please be sure to submit your donation with your employer's matching program. Our Company Matching page offers a search tool to guide donors through their matching process. If you have not yet donated, please click the button below to donate on GHSC Toolkit.

Classroom Giving Drive are grade-level specific. If you wait until the Walkathon Drive to donate, those donations go to the general fund for programs and school-wide events.

Ready For Ice Cream with Friends?

Guadalupe's Annual Ice Cream Social is coming up this Wednesday, 9/6, starting at 6PM. Come to the lunch benches to enjoy some yummy ice cream and toppings and let the kids enjoy the evening playing on campus.

This is also an excellent opportunity to connect or reconnect with parents. Don't miss sign-ups for few organizations that will be sharing information for programs that are either already on campus or coming up.  See you there!

Limited Edition Orders Closing

The 23/24 Limited Edition Guadalupe Shirt is still for sale for one more week.   Ordering closes on Friday, September 8th.

Need to Drop-off Early? Mileage Club starts 7:40am

Did you know students are not allowed on campus unattended before 8:05 AM? Supervision doesn't begin until 8:05 AM.

The perfect solution is to register your student for Guadalupe's Mileage Club.       5 days a week, (weather and vacation days permitting) a parent volunteer will be monitoring student runners on the upper track while they do one or two laps. It's a great way for your student start to day and parents can get on the road to work earlier! Students earn prizes for milestones they meet. All students must be preregistered.

GHSC Supports Guadalupe’s 23/24 Academic Challenges

We are community built to support students who are eager to explore, engage, and find challenges in their academic pursuits. With the goal to have fun while learning, join us for our academic challenges this year!

Detailed information about the different academic challenges will be shared in mid September. Stay tuned!

After-School Program Info

Guadalupe has several outside vendors that come on campus to provide After-School classes. From Starting Arts Productions to Guadalupe Alumni Run Camden Parna Yoga for Kids. Parent's can find more info flyers on these programs on the Guadalupe School Site

BEACH DAY 9/8

It's still hot outside! What a perfect time to celebrate the beach at Guadalupe. Students are invited to dress up for the beach on our first Spirit Day of the school year. Students should only wear shoes to school, no flip-flops please.

BLUE & GOLD DAY 9/29

Let's celebrate Guadalupe's two colors, blue and gold. Keep it simple with themed clothes, hair ties, accessories, or wear a Guadalupe T-shirt!

If you take a great photo of your students dressed up, please share your photo on the GHSC Facebook group post or email it to yearbook.ghsc@gmail.com.

Volunteers During School

At the Back-2-School Night, teachers made a call for parent help with the many programs GHSC brings into the classrooms during school hours. Below is a list of areas still need.

Community Event Help

GHSC is finalizing plans for all the events we have planned for the 23/24 school year. Family volunteers are crucisl and help Event Chairs build a team to execute successful events for the whole school!

If you are interested in any of the above volunteer opportunities, please sign up on the GHSC Toolkit Volunteer Interest Form. Your Program/Event Chair will reach out about what kind of help is needed when it's time to launch. Volunteering is flexible and much appreciated! If you have a question about any volunteer opportunity, please contact volunteer.ghsc@gmail.com.

IMPORTANT ITEMS FROM MRS. HAMCHUK

  1. District Illness Absence Policy: If your student has vomited, had diarrhea, or run a fever of 100˚F or above in the last 24 hours. Please keep your student home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours. Please report your student's illness and absence daily by calling the Guadalupe Attendance Line - Please call ‭(408) 927-9452‬
  2. District Independent Study Change: The district has changed its Independent Study Contract Guideline. The guideline now states, "The minimum period for any short-term independent study option shall be three consecutive school days and no longer than 14 days." Parents are still required to contact their student's teacher at least two weeks in advance to request a contract to be set up.
  3. Arriving After 8:15 AM: Students coming to school after 8:15 AM are officially late. All late students must go to the front office to check in and get a late slip. If you try to sneak your student in downstairs, your student will be asked to return to the front office for a late slip. Reduce the time your student loses in class because they are late by dropping up in the front parking lot.
  4. YARD DUTY SHORTAGE: The front office is still short on Yard Duties for lunchtime. They are just asking for a dedication of one lunch shift weekly. If you are interested in helping, please get in touch with Mrs. Hamchuk <hamchukj@unionsd.org>.
  5. Volunteering/Visiting Campus this Year? If you haven't filled out USD's code of conduct or submitted your Driver's License to the Raptor System in the office, please let your Teacher know.
  6. WARNING "One Chip Challenge": Students are bringing extremely hot/spicy chips to school, challenging students, or giving them to classmates without warning. Please keep an eye on these chips if you have them at home.
  7. Forgotten something at home? Parents should leave lunches, water bottles, glasses, etc on the table outside the office to avoid interrupting class instruction.
  8. Label Bottle/Lunch Boxes/Clothing: Cooler weather will be here sooner than you think; please label all the items your student carries or layers of clothing they can take off. Please help us keep our Lost & Found empty.
  9. Have a non-urgent question or comment for the office? Please avoid the office first thing in the morning- it's a busy time when Mrs. Hamchuk is helping tardy students get to class.

All district guidelines are provided in the Union District Parents' Annual Rights Notification.

If you have any questions please email Mrs. Hamchuk <hamchukj@unionsd.org>

Introducing Internation Fair @ Guad

A team of parent volunteers is in the early stages of planning a return to Guadalupe's International Fair. Originally a second-grade event, we are opening it up to the whole school this year. This year's International Fair focuses on a "Tour around the World.” Hence, the boarding pass in the flyers bringing Grizzly onto a plane.

Countries to be presented at the fair include the USA, India, UK, South Korea, Azerbaijan, Belize, Mexico, Japan, and hopefully many more. If you are interested in volunteering or helping bring another culture to life at the Fair, please click the button below or scan the QR code on the flyer. (Click flyer image for full view)

Portrait Day 9/22

Friday, 9/22, is portrait day for the whole school. A reminder will be sent out mid-week to parents but you can also find Portrait Day listed on the GHSC Calendar.
