Comments from Principal Jones & Staff

Virtual Recess: Mr. Jones hosted a Virtual Recess over Zoom with the 5th-grade students, a new opportunity for students to connect with Mr. Jones. Overall he felt the experience was an excellent opportunity for the students. He is still exploring ideas for recess time. Students were broken up into break out rooms, and some rooms were given questions to create a group discussion. What he found is that 5th Graders would much rather play games in the rooms. Fourth grade is slated to be the next Virtual recess on Tues 8/31. Mr. Jones and the teachers will provide details by Monday, and parents are welcome to jump on or listen in the conversations.

Virtual Learning Concerns - Mr. Jones touched on parents' concern about the quantity or quality of the work being assigned to students. He expressed the importance of allowing all the grades to add more topics and classwork for students. Noting that Virtual Learning is being added in layers across all the grades by the teachers, which will be full speed or more prevalent by the second week of September.

On-Campus: Mr. Jones noted that only a few teachers utilize their classrooms for the daily class routines. Mr. Jones, Mrs. Hamchuk (front office admin), and Ms. Ferguson (school nurse) are on campus daily. Office hours are from 8 am-4 pm, but please contact Mr. Jones or Mrs. Hamchuk via email or phone before your arrival. A mask does need to be worn while on campus.

Messages for the Firegihters:  Mr. Jones received some great messages for the women and men fighting the fires all over the bay area. He is still collecting written notes, artworks, or thank you cards to give out to the firefighters. Please email a photo of the work for Mr. Jones ~ jonesda@unionsd.org

NEW Guadalupe Extended Care Hours: The Extended Care program is currently running at 12 pm - 6 pm. Starting on 9/8, the program will extend hours to 8 am-6 pm.

State Waiver: Union School District plans to submit a waiver to start a small cohort presence on campus. Before the waiver request can be submitted, several requirements need to be met: Superintend said they were pretty close to submitting the request. It has been reported that Moreland district has already received approval for their request. 72 students out of the 7000 student population.

Parent Community Group Meeting 8/12

Discussing Fires with Students: A parent asked Mr. Jones, how can parents discuss or react to, the fires happening all over California. Mr.Jones shared a few essential suggestions:

  • Let your students share their feelings and talk about the situation about the fires. It's okay to be sad or scared, but there are ways to get past these emotions. Students' anxiety can increase with parents discussing the fires or watching new programs on TV.

  • Focus on students' basic level of needs, as parents vocalize, you as their parent, are there to keep them safe, and there are many people around us to help keep us safe. Focus on saying, "we are safe."

  • Work on their agency, help them understand that they can make a difference, or stay safe. For example, when you smell smoke, stay inside, wear a mask, and let them make decisions, how to help others who are affected more about the fires.

Mr. Jones provided this article last week to help parents; it provides other tips for talking with kids about bad news: Helping Your Children Deal with Bad News
