Here is a complete breakdown of the topics discussed in this week’s meeting.

Comments from Principal Jones & Staff

Outlook for 20/21: Mr. Jones discussed how U.S. Senate hearings on re-opening schools didn't bring anything to light for plans. The District is still waiting for updates from the State and County office of Education.

New District Task Forces: The District is organizing a task force to explore options for what school will look like for the 20/21 school year, with principals, parents, students, and teachers from each school. They are being tasked with brainstorming and coming up with options for the District opening the campuses to students and daily life at school in the new school year.

More Zoom Meetings: Mr. Jones has received requests from families for classes to do more Zoom meetings at the Elementary level. He spoke at length as to there being no current evidence, showing that increasing the number of zoom lessons is improving lllearning. Dale did point out that there will be recorded lessons by teachers if @ Home Learning continues in the Fall. He also commented the District is working towards building back to a classroom community with a system/curriculum that returns us to student accountability and meeting state standards.

Teacher Appreciation Week: The teachers attending the call all commented on how they truly cherished receiving all the cards last week and are missing the students and staff.

Computer/iPad/Online Support & Issues: Please contact our Tech Guru Denise Goodhart if you are having problems with Chromebooks, iPads, Connectivity to the internet or any of the learning apps provided by the district.

Mr. Jones CHALLENGE: Coming this Sunday.....be on the lookout.

Parent Community Update

Communicating Future Changes to Students: Parents inquired about how they should tell their students about the changes to their learning in the Fall. Mr. Jones suggests focusing on how learning is being done now. Since we have no information on how daily school and learning will look like for 20/21, he expressed being factual with students but not giving too much information based on "What if's." Mr. Jones also offered parents with a student who is having concerns about school next year, can reach out to him via email to schedule a one on one Zoom call with your student.

Asynchronous Learning: Mr. Jones talked more about this topic and expressed that Zooms calls are invaluable in keeping connections and creating a more shared experience. He expressed that for classroom learning, it will be in an Asynchronous format. Several parents already highlight that their Kinder classes are already doing small group asynchronous learning for reading. Parents commented they feel their students are receiving more vocal and assistance in the small group meetings.

Student Burn-out:  A discussion between parents and teachers about students getting to the point where they no longer want to participate in zooms or complete classwork. The teachers and Mr. Jones emphasized that as parents, they are in control of their students learning at home. Mr. Jones suggested coming up with alternative activities that still keep students active and possibly spark some learning. Teachers suggested reaching out to your teacher for suggestions to keep students focused.

Summer Learning: Mr. Jones expressed that students should focus on enjoying summer activities and return to learning at the beginning of the school year.

NEXT MEETING TOPIC: In our next Community Meeting on 5/27 @ 9AM, Mr. Jones will discuss the topic of Summer Activities as an alternative to Summer Learning. If you have some great ideas, please join us or feel free to share your ideas with Mr. Jones jonesda@unionsd.org.

PARENTGROUP.GHSC@GMAIL.COM: This is our new email address for parents to ask questions or inquire for more information. If you are unable to attend the next community meeting, please feel free to email us your questions, and the moderator will make sure they're answered
