Parent Community Group Meeting

4/15 Update

After a week break and return to @ Home Learning, we saw a good number of Guadalupe parents join this week's community Zoom meeting. As we make our way through April, Principal Jones and the staff will start to have more information about the end of the school year in mid-May. Our next Community Zoom meeting is scheduled for next Weds. 4/22 @ 9:00 AM (Zoom Link provided below.)

Comments from Principal Jones & Staff

Parent Education Night: Principal Jones will be hosting a parent education class; he will be discussing the book.If you haven't had a chance to read the book and would like a copy dropped off at your house, we have copies that are available to be checked out. Computer/iPad/Online Support & Issues: Please contact our Tech Guru Denise Goodhart if you are having problems with Chromebooks, iPads, Connectivity to the internet or any of the learning apps provided by the district.  

 

District Survey Results: Mr. Jones gave a brief overview of the feedback received from the recent district survey about @ Home Learning. He recently received the data and will be working with the staff to see how things can be adjusted. Here are a few of the takeaways he presented.

  • Guadalupe received 80 responses
    • Amount of Classwork:
      • 20 people: Not Enough
      • 30 people: Just the right amount
      • 4 people:   Too much
      • Remaining families did not answer.
    • Screen Time: The majority of respondents noted there was too much screentime with requests for more off-screen classwork.
    • Social Zoom Meeting: The majority replied in favor of more social zoom meetings. 
    • Classroom Zoom Meetings: A significant number of parents were concerned there were too many meetings.
    • Science & Social Studies: were the topics parent felt were lacking. 

 

Student Emails: 4th & 5th Grade Students will be receiving access to send emails to teachers and classmates using their unionsd.org accounts. Students will only be able to send or receive emails addressed with a unionsd.org address.  

 

Mr. Jones CHALLENGE: Dale will be doing a new challenge next week that will include all of the elementary schools in the district. Be on the lookout for his email for next week.

Parent Community Update

Parents discussed with the community about their experience over spring break. 

 

Community Feedback: Mr. Jones asks parents for some feedback concerning @ Home Learning lesson plans that the teachers created or any other concerns with the experience.

  • Parents requested more consistent scheduling of the zoom meetings.
  • Requests for teachers to avoid scheduling meeting during lunch hour (12 PM-1 PM)
  • Parents were very happy with some of the teachers holding meetings daily, even for 15-20 minutes.
  • Parents also like that some teachers were hosting meetings early in the morning (8:30 AM).
  • Parents liked that a few teachers were providing an incentive for the class to turn in their classwork by Friday.

 

Zoom App Concerns: Parents brought up a few questions about the Zoom App and the recent 

  • Zoom App on Chromebooks, Parents/Students, find the web-based site too buggy. Mrs. Goodhart says the district is not allowing due to concern students using for personal reasons. Mr. Jones will look into the matter. 
  • Security Update is automatic; teachers are now utilizing the "waiting room" feature to approve anyone coming into the meeting. Be sure your student's name is correct.

 

Blue Light Concerns: Parents have expressed concern about too much use of computer and tablet screens. Some parents have recommended that students wear blue light glasses, which can be found online for $12.


6th Grade Orientation: The principals of the middle schools will be reaching out to parents with information on a Virtual Orientation for next year's incoming 6th graders.
